I am back!

The RETURN After a couple of months of no activity because of personal stuff, I am back again. I have been very busy these past months, then I had no energy to watch movies and even less to make a single small review... well you all know that it takes up neurons.  I will be watching more movies and posting daily content on Letterboxd and I will also be sharing some thoughts here. P.S. I'm very excited about Saw X , it will be released in a month, I can't wait for it.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), more like an odyssey to decipher its ending

 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Hello everyone, let's analyse this futuristic space movie!

Stanley Kubrick directed this piece back in 1968, in the time it was released it had to set a milestone, thanks to the astonishing colors, the scientific aspect and, mainly, becasue of the special effects which were used.

It's about a group of astronauts who start their journey on their way to Jupiter, in order to complete an investigation task.

This movie enjoys of a couple of interesting characters, an innovative story for the time it was released, a good plot with some surprises, a beautiful imagery and an amazing soundtrack. It has a very slooow pacing, I don't know if that's a problem, because, despite this, it manages to get the viewer glued to the screen during the whole movie, but maybe adding a 1.25x speed would be something fine.

It introduces the typical debate about machines versus humans, do machines become sensitive? Will machines take over humans? Are we ready to face them? Well, without having a clear answer, we have already reached 2023 and seems like everything goes alright, just yet, Stanley Kubrick was expecting it to happen back in 2001, but, apparently, it didn't happen.

Here I come with the question which everyone makes to themself after finishing this movie, yeah you know that awkward moment who nobody likes of... WHAT DID STANLEY KUBRICK WANTED TO DEPICT WITH THAT ENDING?

The ending gives a bittersweet taste to the viewer, it's a bit strange, so everyone can take their own conclusions. Stanley Kubrick died in 1999, people was waiting for him to answer this repetitive question which was wandering through the mind of many filmlovers, in 2001, then so many people got frustrated. The thing they didn't know is that Kubrick already had answered that question in a Japanese documentary about paranormal phenomena, I leave you here the link to the YouTube video (the answer to this question starts at the minute 49:48).

Anyway I know that some of you are a bit lazy, then I'm going to quote what Kubrick said there, in the phone call for the interview, to solve the next question: What happens at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey?:

- "I’ve tried to avoid doing this ever since the picture came out. When you just say the ideas they sound foolish... They put him in what I suppose you could describe as a human zoo to study him... And he has no sense of time... Anyway, when they get finished with him, as happens in so many myths of all cultures in the world, he is transformed into some kind of super being and sent back to Earth, transformed and made into some sort of superman. We have to only guess what happens when he goes back. It is the pattern of a great deal of mythology, and that is what we were trying to suggest."

To put and end to this entry, I have to say that I'm not very much of a fan of this kind of space content, this one in particular was surely a revolutionary movie, which set the basis for all the upcoming ones. Anyway watching it today doesn't feel like anything amazing, it aged well, but today we are used to high doses of special effects, then we are desensitised in a lot of aspects.

But, after all, it's a must watch, so if you haven't watched it yet, you should!!
